The robots are faster, safer and more cost effective than the traditional security guard model” says Group CEO, Mike Marr.

The robots remove the need to put a human guard in to a dangerous situation and work alongside traditional guards saving customers 30-50%, pricing starting at just $12.00 per hour.

A reliable security solution, providing surveillance, presence and peace of mind. The robot can patrol continuously for up to 20 hours; autonomously following a patrol route, avoiding obstacles and notifying of any significant security events or changes. The robot will autonomously re-charge itself and continue patrols without human support.

The system is highly configurable and its inbuilt artificial intelligence allows it to learn and understand its environment/terrain and make decisions on routing and obstacle avoidance. Utilising the ground robots, provides a significant ‘Presence’ to a site, and allows the surveillance to be completed without the gaps that are a limitation of fixed camera systems.

The introduction of robots into a security system will allow the guard force to be optimised and only committed to incidents where the threat can be properly assessed. The robot can be used effectively indoors or outdoors and can patrol large areas very effectively.

They are fully equipped with closed circuit television cameras that operate smart technology with these streaming back to a centralised operator.

This product release follows VigilAir, sister company of Advanced Security, who announced their integrated security drone response system in November last year. The VigilAir system integrates drones with electronic security systems to deliver smarter outcomes to customers.

Both the robots as well as VigilAir are available via Advanced Security in New Zealand.

About Advanced Security

Advanced Security Group is the largest nationwide electronic security integrator with 13 branches across the country. Simply put, our software will enable drones to be the first-response security guards of the future,” says director of VigilAir Limited, Mike Marr.

Mr Marr’s company has spent some years pioneering the use of drones with new technology for security purposes, including self-funding their own research and development, and it’s all run out of their Auckland premises.

New Zealand has been at the forefront of drone/UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) regulation. VigilAir continues to work closely with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to develop the equipment, systems, and processes to provide a safe and effective service.

The VigilAir solution will be provided as a full-service solution, with drone enclosure, installation and full ongoing support provided.

The product and service operate under a current Civil Aviation Authority certification, with work underway to rapidly expand the operating parameters. International patents are also well underway for the software that can dispatch camera-equipped drones to investigate any external security event.

VigilAir is a SaaS product that integrates drones into existing electronic security systems. It’s suited to large outdoor sites such as retail and industrial parks, hospitals, university campuses, schools, ports, prisons, and town centres that are at risk of burglary, vandalism or security breaches. A security drone will also be an effective deterrent.

When not flying, the drone sits in an enclosure - dubbed a nest - located on a business site. When alerted by an alarm sensor trigger, it will be dispatched to fly over the site to investigate, recording and live-streaming high definition video footage to whoever’s monitoring the action.

The drone may include a thermal or infra-red camera, and bright LED floodlights to illuminate any intruder and record the scene. The hovering drone may sound a siren or even talk to the intruder using a two-way communications system.

Before leaving the nest, the VigilAir SaaS system checks the weather data, then the drone flies a pre-determined flight route that’s geo-fenced to preserve neighbours’ privacy and comply with flight regulations.

A future release will allow the drone to be further manoeuvred to follow any fleeing suspects, capturing images of them and their vehicle license plate number as they evade. The drone then returns to its nest to recharge.

“After considerable R&D, innovation and years of trials, not to mention processing technology and software patents, to now be able to unleash the product onto the international market is really exciting.

“Vigil Air’s system is all about delivering faster, safer, and more cost-effective security for organisations or businesses with large sites and security installations.”

Mr Marr says to be able to fly a rapid response drone literally directly into a crime, and to record and transmit all that’s happening, has huge advantages over a traditional on-the-ground security response.

“And we’ve designed it to be user-friendly. Security guards, whether on site or operating remotely, will be able to use the system and it’s one that can already ‘talk’ to 99% of all existing electronic security systems.

“As you can imagine this is all a lot safer than dispatching a guard on foot to check out a security problem. Drones will help catch perpetrators as everything’s recorded which is gold for any eventual prosecutions. And importantly, the ongoing cost will be lighter on operational budgets.”

Mr Marr says VigilAir has the potential to make $400m in annualised revenue. This is largely because the fully integrated semi-autonomous system is a world-leader and its ease of operation and effectiveness has wide appeal for any organisation needing to protect its assets or people.

VigilAir is completing reseller agreements with two major international corporations, providing a channel for product export and on-going support.

“We’re very confident in its success. We’ve done exhaustive searches and cannot find anything to compare with VigilAir’s system worldwide. It’s truly a global first with unlimited potential.”

Further, he believes harnessing drone technology for security purposes was somewhat inevitable for a company that has been at the forefront of CCTV and wireless security technology in New Zealand.

VigilAir’s interest in drones however doesn’t stop at security. Mr Marr says while their use for aerial photography is well established, considerable potential remains in core New Zealand sectors like agriculture, construction and forestry.

“Our drones have assisted the police in search and rescue operations in hard-to-reach terrain like cliffs and crevasses. And we’ve done all sorts of work from inspecting the Auckland Harbour Bridge to looking for leaks on the roofs of central city buildings.”

As well as inspecting infrastructure and assets, smart drone technology is used for Infrared imagery to track heat-loss and to create 3D models that are dimensionally correct to a few centimetres.

VigilAir was invented and developed by ASG Technologies - a technology incubator established three years ago by TPT Group. TPT Group has a stable of security businesses - the best known in New Zealand being Advanced Security.

Based at East Tamaki, Mr Marr is the founder of TPT Group and remains its CEO. He is also directly heading VigilAir which was founded last year to commercialise ASG’s drone control software.

Mr Marr says the experienced VigilAir team, led by Andy Grant an ex Warfare Officer from the Navy, includes software and mechatronic engineers and a commercial pilot. The team remains focussed on the ongoing development of the VigilAir capability and delivering world-leading future-focused security technology.

“To now launch a semi-autonomous ‘eye in the sky’ solution, incorporating an on-site drone with cloud-based SaaS software, is a long way from how we initially viewed drones - as flying CCTV cameras to support the fixed ones.”

He says with the world continually urbanising, ongoing security technology innovation will help with many governments’ aspirations to develop safer cities.

TPT Group is also advancing robotic technology with the intent of one day launching fully autonomous ‘foot patrol’ robots to work in conjunction with its security drones.

www.tptgroup.co.nz

www.vigilair.co.nz

www.asgtechnologies.co

ENDS

For further information

Please contact:

Mike Marr

Group CEO

Phone 0800 420032

www.tptgroup.co.nz

NOTE TO EDITOR: Businesses within TPT Group Holdings (NZ) Limited include VigilAir Limited, ASG Technologies Limited, Advanced Security Group, TPT Finance (NZ) Limited, Sentinel Technologies, Promessa Property Group Limited, ASGSPL Limited, Asset Insight Limited, and TPT Group Investments Limited.

The TPT Group of Companies have a social conscience and support a number of community initiatives including the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, LifeWise, and the Lifewise Big Sleep Out.

ASG Technologies have a 100% diverse workforce with each individual having a different ethnic background.

Taking leadership lessons to the next generation

Photo: Roger Stokell Associate Dean, International and Engagement with Mike Marr, TPT Group.Friday, 07 July 2017Aspiring student leaders from schools across Auckland recently spent the day walking in the footsteps of business greats as part of the AUT Business and Law Schools’ Shadow a Leader programme. Now in its fifth year, Shadow a Leader matches a year 13 student and an AUT business or law student with a business leader. The support centre will offer services that provide and promote holistic care, education, advocacy and a positive outlook for children and their families who may be unsupported, misunderstood and challenged within a mainstream education environment.

“Over the last ten years in the Counties region, it has been brought to our attention a growing number of families who have children with ADHD related challenges and who are struggling to succeed within the mainstream environment. These children typically miss out on educational support funding, fall through the gaps and are often branded, in-tolerated, and treated as naughty or incompetent. The results of this is tragic, on both the child and the stress this puts onto families. It can negatively impact all involved for years to come. It is confusing and overwhelming for parents as to how to handle these challenges and support services seem to be unattainable due to unawareness, expense and travel. These families need someone who can get alongside them, understand the journey and pull it altogether for them. This is what the Runway Foundation aims to assist with - to help make their path easier, so that it is not only a manageable journey but uniquely positive. These children have a huge amount of potential, they are often gifted and entrepreneurial and with the right support, can achieve astounding things in life.” says Terese

Other initiatives of the Runway Foundation include working in the community with youth helping to support them to achieve their potential and generally supporting families and people in need through partnering with other charitable organisations such as food-banks, crisis funds and counseling services.

About TPT Group

TPT Group Holdings (NZ) Limited was founded in 1999 and consists of companies in the electronic security, finance, commercial/industrial property, and technology sectors. They continue to impress as a company that wishes to extend itself through constant growth and improvement in business support,” said category evaluator and senior lecturer in management at AUT, Dr Roy Smollan.

Mr Marr said that as an integrated security solutions company, Advanced’s focus is on meeting the security needs of its customers. To do this effectively though, he said their customers need to trust that Advanced has their back.

“Trust requires a relationship and you don’t have a relationship with technology. You trust people. So we support our team to take real ownership of customer relationships. Everyone, regardless of their role, is encouraged to foster relationships with our customers. It isn’t someone else’s responsibility – it’s everyone’s responsibility.”

Advanced Security Group’s internal structure is flat, not hierarchical, so everyone has access to the same information which Mr Marr says is designed to support that ownership and customer engagement. But the focus isn’t just on customers. Monthly ‘on us’ team lunches or breakfasts, weekly meetings, regular training and staff newsletters that go to everyone’s home address to keep family informed, are just some of the ways that Advanced works to ensure staff feel valued.

“It’s by focusing on our people that we’ve been able to really develop as a business with an average 30 percent growth per year since we started some 13 years ago. We’ve gone from one office to having 12 offices serving both islands,” Mr Marr said.

“We are delighted to receive this award but it belongs to our staff and reflects their commitment to our customers. Security work isn’t really supposed to get a lot of attention and it usually doesn’t unless something goes wrong. That makes recognition of this sort all the more sweet.”

ENDS

For further information

Please contact:

Mike Marr

Group CEO

Phone 0800 420032

www.tptgroup.co.nz

Sparkie-turned-$23 million security technology expert wins supreme Business Support award

Leaders in everything from legal services to research, from search optimisation to disputes resolution and more gathered to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the AUT Excellence in Business Support Awards this week. The robust entry and evaluation process enables finalists to reflect on how effectively their organisation achieves business excellence in all key areas."

Advanced Security CEO Mike Marr says the awards process was a chance for companies to “sharpen” and “grow”.

Marr, an electrician by training, went the corporate route early in his career, but in 1999 found himself in a job he hated. He handed back the keys to the company car, ditched the corporate salary, dug out his sparkie’s toolbelt and started his own electrical and security business.

“I complained to my wife about my job and she said ‘If those guys [his former bosses] can do it, so can you.’”

Three years later, Marr was your average Kiwi small business: a $400,000-a-year turnover security system installation and service business with a handful of staff. That all changed when he found out German multinational engineering firm Siemens was getting out of security technology in New Zealand, and he decided to try to buy the loss-making operations.

“We were with the lawyers signing the debenture documents and they were saying: ‘Do you really know what you are doing?’ And the bank didn’t believe my forecasts, but just lent to me because I had a house.”

Over the next 13 years, Marr bought another five companies and set up 12 offices across New Zealand. Revenue grew 30% on average each year and looks set to hit $23 million this year. The company has 100 staff.

So why does Marr think Advanced Security won the top prize at the Business Support Awards? He says the company’s philosophy around continuous improvement, its ISO accreditation, and the company focus on staff gave them the edge – plus some impressive financial growth.

“Our people play a huge part. Advanced Security is a service business, so great people make a great business.”

Mike Marr celebrates with his parents at the awards ceremony this week. Photo thanks to Lavinia Calvert

Marr says he realized early on it was essential to have fully-trained employees – not contractors – in the regions, both in terms of customer service and company stability.

“We have an amazing staff retention rate – most of the people that came over from Siemens and other acquisitions are still with us today and this is a huge thing for us; it gives us a solid foundation. Having engaged people is a big part in terms of making us the industry’s best financial performer.”

He says the company offers industry-recognised training and person development opportunities, and staff safety nets, like a confidential employee crisis fund.

When the child of a staff member recently ended up in hospital for several weeks, the company not only supported the mother, but also paid the wages of another employer to stay with the mother in hospital.

While the majority of Advanced Security’s systems use other company’s technology, it is increasingly looking at developing its own applications, particularly in the drone and cloud space.

For example, the company’s E-Guard division is looking at how drones could be used to check out an unoccupied commercial building if an alarm went off. Marr says the Advanced Security has received an exemption from Civil Aviation Authority rules which would allow it to use drones to send back live pictures from an unmanned, or difficult-to-reach site, and is in the process of patenting some new technology.

It is also investigating Cloud-based security services, which could see Advanced Security hosting swipe card, door access, camera footage and other security data for companies. This information has traditionally been stored by the companies themselves.

“E-Guard is looking 5-10 years into the future and dreaming about what is possible in the technology space and how to make this into a commercial reality. The statistics suggest up to 80% of future businesses haven’t been invented yet, so we need to be continuously looking into the future of security technology.

“We are talking to Callaghan Innovation.”

The 2015 AUT Excellence in Business Support Awards were sponsored by Idealog, ICG, Fuji Xerox, Drake New Zealand, CPA, the Institute of Management, IBM and the New Zealand Business Excellence Foundation.

The entrant organisations are evaluated in five assessment sections: leadership; understanding of customer and market needs; development and delivery of services and products; evaluation of its own performance; and (the heaviest weighting) evidence of results in terms of the business support they provide.

Winners at the awards ceremony this week.
